Vita of St. Wolfgang

1520
Left and right wings of the Altar of St. Wolfgang
Parish church of Waldburg, Austria

In the upper panel of the left wing the saint draws water from a rock in order to revive his ailing companion. In the lower panel he forces the devil to help him build his oratory. The right wing pictures his famously effective preaching (above) and (below) the story of the axe that he threw into a valley so God could reveal where he wanted him to build his hermitage.

All the panels except the upper right correspond to legends printed in the Acta Sanctorum, November II(i), 549-50.
